When you think of Colombian exports, coffee might be the first thing that comes to mind. But the country is also making a name for itself in the cocoa industry. In 2020, Colombia produced 63,416 tons of cocoa beans, making it the 11th largest producer in the world. But it's not just about the sheer quantity — Colombia is also one of the leading suppliers of fine cocoa: According to the International Cocoa Organization (ICCO), an impressive 95% of the beans produced in Colombia are fine cocoa or flavored cocoa. The proximity to the equator and the climate diversity caused by the differences in altitude make Colombia a particularly well-suited country for cocoa cultivation. This results in an impressive variety of flavors, including fruity and floral notes, making Colombian cacao a delicious and unique option for chocolate lovers everywhere.
